NASA’s audio recordings of planets, particularly Saturn, have sparked curiosity and fascination. These recordings, however, are not the sounds of planets as we might imagine them. Instead, they are electromagnetic vibrations translated into audio for human ears. The Saturn Kilometric Radiation, for instance, is a coherent radio emission generated near the planet’s auroral regions, detected by the Cassini spacecraft’s Radio and Plasma Wave Science instrument. The audio file is produced by shifting and compressing the electric-field oscillations in the kilohertz range, making the frequencies audible to humans.
